International Women's Day is celebrated

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 and is recognized by the United Nations. This day commemorates women's struggle for their participation, on an equal footing with men, in society and in their integral development as a person.

March 8 is a date celebrated by women's groups around the world. When women from all continents, often separated by national borders and ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back on a tradition of no less than 90 years of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

According to the President of the Citizenship and Human Rights Commission, Uruguayan parliamentarian Adriana Peña, March is the “month” of women, “it is an opportunity to reflect and assess where we stand with respect to gender equality.”

Parliamentarian Marisa Serrano, until recently the only female representative of the Brazilian caucus in the MERCOSUR Parliament, highlights that “International Women's Day serves to question and reflect on the achievements and the condition of women in society.

- The good news is that there are more women in universities, they are more studious and have a higher approval rate in public competitions, however in the private sector, the salary differences between men and women continue to exist. Regrettably, unemployment still affects women more. Therefore, our struggle continues to guarantee a more just and equal society – said Serrano.
